1.Project Honors:

China Construction Engineering Luban Award (National High-Quality Engineering)

2.Project Overview:

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway (Addis AbabaDjibouti Standard Gauge Railway), officially the Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway, is a freight-oriented railway connecting Ethiopia and Djibouti. It's East Africa's first standard-gauge electrified railway, an early success of the Belt and Road Initiative and the ten cooperation plans of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. It symbolizes China-Africa 'Three Networks and One Electrification' and capacity cooperation and represents the first full-industry-chain 'go-global' railway project built by a Chinese company overseas. It is hailed as the 'Tanzam Railway of a New Era'.

The railway starts from Sebeta Station in Ethiopia in the west and ends at Djibouti Doraleh Port Station in Djibouti in the east, with a total length of752.7kilometers and45stations, with a design speed of120kilometers/per hour.

3.Technical Challenges:

Complex geological structures, difficulties in construction during the rainy season in the tropical savannah climate zone, and a shortage of railway subgrade filling materials

4.Key Ancillary Projects:

Adama Station, Dire Dawa Station

5.Value and Significance:

The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is the first overseas railway project with a fully "Chinese" industrial chain, integrating design standards, investment and financing, equipment and materials, construction, supervision, and operation management. It is a landmark achievement of the Belt and Road Initiative. Ethiopia, located in northeastern Africa, is home to the headquarters of the African Union. The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway has significant strategic value, transforming Ethiopia from a "landlocked" country into a "land-linked" country, significantly promoting the interconnectivity of personnel, goods, and materials transportation in the Horn of Africa region and playing a vital role in driving regional economic prosperity. The "build one railway, drive one economic belt" model pioneered by the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway provides new development ideas for China to expand international capacity cooperation.
