Wuxi Grand Theatre

Wuxi Grand Theatre covers an area of approximately 67,600 square meters and is a seven-story building above ground with one underground floor. The total building area is approximately 78,000 square meters, with a height exceeding 50 meters. The theatre building consists of a main performance hall, a comprehensive performance hall, and related supporting facilities.

As a flagship initiative of Wuxi City in developing its cultural industry, the Wuxi Grand Theatre was started in 2009, designed by Finnish designer Pekka Salminen, with a total investment exceeding one billion yuan and completed in 3 years. The theatre's shape is unique; an aerial view shows eight "wings" resembling a butterfly landing on the city's waterfront. From its exterior to interior decoration, the most advanced domestic and international materials were used. The theatre extensively uses glass curtain walls, and bamboo is used instead of wood for the floors, seating, and walls.

This building was designed by Finnish architect Pekka Salminen. According to Pekka Salminen, the design inspiration for the Wuxi Grand Theatre comes from nature. "Natural structures are the most beautiful, and the architecture of Wuxi, a garden city, should reflect this philosophy." In addition, the Wuxi Grand Theatre embodies the concept of "green design" throughout. Consideration for the environment and ecology, and strategies for efficient energy use, are incorporated into the overall design: the roof shape, symbolizing "leaves" or "wings," suggests "green thinking"; minimizing the building's temperature control volume; using energy from the nearby lake water for building heating and cooling; using the "leaf" roof to provide shade for the building; and an intelligent and energy-saving building exterior design.
