Xishan Extra-Long Tunnel on the Taigu Expressway in Shanxi

The Taigu Expressway is a benchmark highway project in Shanxi Province. The entire expressway is 23.404 meters long, with a main line of 20 kilometers, a Dongshe interchange of 1.427 kilometers, and a connecting line of 1.977 kilometers. The Xishan extra-long tunnel has a left line of 13654 meters and a right line of 13570 meters, making it the second largest highway tunnel in China. Special landscape lighting is installed inside the tunnel to ensure the safety and comfort of vehicles traveling through it.

The lighting inside the Xishan extra-long tunnel is very dense. In both the left and right tunnels, there are more than 4000 lights of various wattages, with a pair approximately every 5 meters. In addition, there are 1135 emergency lights. To prevent drivers from experiencing visual discomfort upon entering the tunnel, 400-watt high-pressure sodium lamps are installed above both sides of the tunnel entrance.

There is also a visual buffer zone in the middle section of the tunnel. When passing through the tunnel, a magnificent light show is truly captivating. Colorful lights wind along the tunnel walls, while the ceiling is illuminated with blue lights, creating the effect of looking up at the surface from underwater. Drivers often feel a sense of refreshment upon reaching this section, which helps alleviate visual fatigue.
