Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway

The Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway (Lanzhou-Chongqing) is a new line designed to improve the railway network layout and facilitate western development in the "Medium and Long-Term Railway Network Plan (2008 Adjustment)". It is a crucial part of the Yuxinou International Railway and the most convenient and fastest route connecting southwest and northwest China.

Connecting with the existing Yuguang Railway, the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway forms a north-south high-speed railway trunk line from Lanzhou to Chongqing and then to Guangzhou. It will become one of three major north-south railway arteries alongside the Beijing-Guangzhou and Beijing-Shanghai lines, and an important channel connecting the western region with the Pearl River Delta and the Yangtze River Delta regions. Upon completion, the railway journey between Lanzhou and Chongqing will be shortened from the current 1466 kilometers to 873 kilometers, and the passenger train travel time from 22 hours to 6 hours.

Jointly constructed by China Railway Corporation, Chongqing Municipality, Gansu Province, and Sichuan Province, the Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway spans 873 kilometers with a total investment of 829.16 billion yuan. Construction began in September 2008. Initially planned for six years, the construction period extended to nine years due to funding issues and geological problems in the Gansu section. The Lanzhou-Chongqing Railway is a Class I national railway, double-track, electrified, and designed for both passenger and freight trains at speeds of 160-250 km/h. The initial target speed for passenger trains is 160 km/h, with 200 km/h in the Sichuan section. An additional 88.7-kilometer single-track railway from Nanchong via Guang'an to Huaying Gaoxingzhen (Gaonan Line) was also built.
