Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station

The Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station is located on the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, at the boundary between Shuifu County, Yunnan Province and Yibin County, Sichuan Province. It is only 500 meters from Shuifu City and is the last hydropower station in the Jinsha River hydropower base, built by the Three Gorges Corporation. It is 157 kilometers upstream from the Xiluodu Hydropower Station dam site. The dam is a concrete gravity dam with a crest elevation of 384 meters, a maximum dam height of 162 meters, and a crest length of 909.26 meters. The dam site controls a drainage area of 458,800 square kilometers, accounting for 97% of the Jinsha River basin area, with an average annual runoff of 3810 cubic meters per second. The total reservoir capacity is 5.163 billion cubic meters, with a regulation capacity of 900 million cubic meters, and a backwater length of 156.6 kilometers. The installed capacity of the power station is 7.75 million kilowatts (8 units of 800,000-kilowatt giant hydraulic turbines and 3 units of 450,000-kilowatt large hydraulic turbines), with a guaranteed power generation of 2.009 million kilowatts and an average annual power generation of 30.747 billion kilowatt-hours. The total static investment is approximately 54.2 billion yuan. The total dynamic investment is 51.9 billion yuan. It is the third largest hydropower station in China and the fifth largest in the world, and also a key power source for the West-to-East power transmission project.

Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station

The Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station is the only super-large dam among the 25 hydropower stations in the Jinsha River hydropower base that also serves irrigation purposes. The other 24 dams have no irrigation facilities. Xiangjiaba is also the only dam in the Jinsha River hydropower base with a ship lift. Its ship lift is comparable in scale to the Three Gorges Dam, making it the world's largest single ship lift. The ship-passing efficiency is far superior to the five-stage ship locks of the Three Gorges Dam. Thousand-ton ships can pass the dam in just 15 minutes, a significant improvement compared to the average 5 hours for the Three Gorges ship locks. The ±800 kV high-voltage DC transmission demonstration project from Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station to Shanghai is one of the most advanced power systems in China with the highest transmission voltage level.
