2. Project Overview:
The Ethiopia Riverbank Green Development Project is the first municipal landscaping project in China's foreign aid construction. It includes the improvement of urban waterways and the construction of parks and other public facilities along the waterways. It is a specific measure to implement the "Green Development" action plan of the "Eight Actions" initiative of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Located in the center of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, the project integrates landscape, architecture, municipal engineering, roads, water conservancy, and gardening. Phase I of the project was completed and handed over to the local government in March 2021, and the construction of the Phase II waterway improvement section officially started on April 22, 2023.

4. Technical Challenges:
Addis Ababa is located on a plateau at an altitude of 2400 meters, and the city's ability to withstand climate change is relatively weak, and its ecological environment is relatively fragile. The city's rising temperatures and natural disasters such as drought and flash floods are also consuming the city's natural resources and weakening its productivity. The project involves more than 20 types of engineering, and it is also necessary to minimize the impact of groundbreaking work on the local original ecology, which is extremely difficult. Despite this, the project achieved green construction that reduced energy consumption and waste within an 11-month construction period, not only without causing an ecological burden on the local area but also improving the local ecological environment. Among them, strong technological support is the key to the success of the project.
Water pollution in dilapidated waterways has been one of the problems that has plagued the citizens of Addis Ababa. In order to thoroughly solve the sewage problem and achieve the sustainable and clean use of water resources in the waterways, Chinese engineering technicians fully considered the local conditions and innovatively introduced many new materials and technologies, which is the first time in Ethiopia and even in East Africa. The project carried out the management of 1.2 kilometers of waterways and built a new semi-underground one-stop sewage treatment plant, which occupies less land than traditional sewage treatment plants in Ethiopia and has higher practical value, achieving high-quality, high-efficiency, clean, green, and sustainable sewage treatment.
Addis Ababa is a habitat for many wild animals, but Ethiopia's eight-month-long dry season each year poses a significant challenge to the survival of wild animals. Therefore, the project was designed with artificial lakes from the outset to bring moist air to the surrounding area to alleviate dryness, and new waterproof and breathable materials were introduced during the construction process, greatly increasing the service life of the artificial lakes while ensuring the normal circulation of the micro-ecosystem in the artificial lakes. Now, even during the prolonged dry season, wild animals have a safe resting place, and nearly 100 species of birds have taken up residence there.
5. Value and Significance:
The construction of the Ethiopia Riverbank Green Development Project has driven local economic development, improved the lives of local people, and promoted friendly relations between the two countries, bringing the friendship between the Chinese and Ethiopian governments to a new milestone, increasing the understanding of the Ethiopian government and people of the Chinese government and Chinese policies. The naming of the Friendship Square, an ancillary project, further reflects the Ethiopian government's recognition and gratitude to China.
The construction of the Ethiopia Riverbank Green Development Project has promoted the "going global" of Chinese standards. The project represents China's advanced landscape design and construction technology. Through the successful implementation of the project, it has received high praise from the Ethiopian Prime Minister, who pointed out that China's development model and advanced technology have always been an example for Ethiopia to learn from.
The project uses advanced domestic tree transplanting standards to implement large-scale tree transplanting. The widespread use of nutrient solutions, rooting agents, and protective agents has filled the gap in Ethiopia's large-scale tree transplanting technology. The artificial lake built in the project is the largest artificial lake in Ethiopia. The implementation of the artificial lake uses advanced domestic wind-accumulated sand anti-seepage blankets for lake bottom sealing, effectively solving the problems of water seepage and leakage in the artificial lake. The one-stop sewage treatment plant adopts a semi-underground structure, which occupies less land than traditional sewage treatment plants in Ethiopia and has higher practical value, becoming a technological model for future sewage treatment in Ethiopia.
The Ethiopia Riverbank Green Development Project has brought economic benefits to Ethiopia, such as increased tourism revenue and increased employment, and has also addressed the environmental pollution and ecological degradation problems that have plagued the local area for many years through project construction, serving as a model project for Ethiopia's efforts to develop tourism. Inspired by this project, the Ethiopian government plans to build three similar parks in Oromia, Amhara, and Southern states. As a model project, the Riverbank Green Development Project embodies the concept of harmonious development between humans and nature, leading the construction and development of Ethiopia towards a more harmonious, beautiful, and green future.
