1. Project Honors:

The world's tallest and largest roller compacted concrete dam under construction, a landmark cooperation model project of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, and Pakistan's new "Three Gorges Project"

2. Project Overview:

The Basha Hydropower Station is located at the border of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in northwestern Pakistan and the Gilgit Baltistan region in the north. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 7.4 billion cubic meters, with an installed capacity of 4500 megawatts. After completion, the annual power generation can reach 18 billion kilowatt hours.

The Basha Hydropower Station is the largest water conservancy hub project under construction in Pakistan. It is a 272 meter high roller compacted concrete gravity dam with a designed pouring volume of 18.6 million cubic meters (including 17.1 million cubic meters of roller compacted concrete and 1.5 million cubic meters of normal concrete). After completion, it will become the world's tallest and largest roller compacted concrete dam.

3. Technical difficulties:

This area is one of the most complex geological structures in the world, and it often experiences disasters such as landslides and floods, posing huge risks to engineering safety and reservoir water storage; Due to the fact that the water source of the Indus River is mostly glacier melting snow, in such complex geological conditions, the region is prone to the formation of barrier lakes; Affected by plate tectonics and geological faults, this area is prone to frequent earthquakes, with high seismic intensity and maximum credible earthquake level, making the dam vulnerable to earthquakes; The design difficulty of high-pressure gates and hydropower facilities for dams is also high.

4. Key ancillary projects:

272 meter high roller compacted concrete gravity dam, 1006.5 meter dam crest length, multiple diversion tunnels, and surge shafts

5. Value significance:

The Basha Dam is Pakistan's new "Three Gorges Project" and a century long dream project that the local people have been eagerly anticipating. During the project construction period, it can solve the local employment problem and provide more than 20000 job opportunities. After the project is completed, it can not only provide 18 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to the local area every year, but also have huge value and practical benefits in many aspects such as economy, employment, energy, disaster reduction, water storage, irrigation, and environmental protection.

The Basha Dam project can enhance Pakistan's efficiency in water resource utilization, improve energy structure, increase the proportion of clean energy, and improve Pakistan's economic development and people's living conditions. It can to some extent prevent the Pakistani people from being affected by floods and play an important role in serving the development of people's livelihoods.
