2. Project Overview:
The Karnaphuli River Tunnel in Bangladesh is located at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong. It connects the east and west banks of the Karnaphuli River via an underwater tunnel. The route is9.3kilometers long, with a design speed of80kilometers per hour, and is a dual-bore, four-lane tunnel. This project represents the first large-diameter underwater shield tunnel built by a Chinese company overseas, as well as the first underwater tunnel in South Asia.
3. Technical Challenges:
Shield launching and receiving in water-rich, fine-grained sand strata; shield posture control in strata with soft upper and hard lower layers; shield excavation control in iron plate sand strata.
4. Key Auxiliary Projects:
The shield tunnel section is2450meters long, with a diameter of11.8meters. A mud-balance shield tunneling machine independently developed and manufactured by China Communications Construction Group was used; the cutterhead diameter of the shield tunneling machine is12.12meters, and it is94meters long with a total weight exceeding2200tons.
5. Value and Significance:
The Karnaphuli River Tunnel is the first tunnel in Bangladesh. As an important component of the "Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar" economic corridor, the tunnel's opening will not only greatly improve transportation conditions in Chittagong and drive economic development in Bangladesh, but also play a significant role in improving the Asian highway network, promoting connectivity between Bangladesh and neighboring countries, and advancing Bangladesh's international development. It also has positive and far-reaching significance for implementing the "Belt and Road" initiative and building the "Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar" economic corridor.
