2.Project Overview:

Mombasa-Nairobi Railway (MombasaNairobi Standard Gauge RailwaySGR), full name Mombasa to Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, total length480kilometers, starting from Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa in the east and reaching Nairobi, the capital of Kenya in the west. It is the first section and an important part of the East African railway network, and it is Kenya’s largest infrastructure construction project since its independence in1963year, and it is the “flagship project” for Kenya to achieve its2030year national development vision.

The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway is a demonstration project of win-win cooperation between China and Africa, and it is also a landmark flagship project of jointly building the “Belt and Road Initiative”. The entire line is built according to the China National Railway Class I standard and started construction on2014year12month12day, and2017year5month31day commenced operations. The line has a total of33stations, including9passenger and freight stations,22passing stations,2marshalling stations; the design speed of the line is120kilometers/per hour.

5.Value and Significance:

The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway created more than7tens of thousands of jobs for Kenya, contributingGDPgrowth rate reaching1.5%and cultivating2000many talents locally. The logistics cost between Nairobi, the capital of Kenya and the port of Mombasa can be reduced by40%The extension line of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway will connect Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and Ethiopia and other East African7countries in the future, further increasing the transport capacity of East African countries, promoting the interconnection and integration of the East African region, promoting economic cooperation and cultural exchange in the East African region, and accelerating Africa’s economic development and improvement of people’s livelihood.
