1. Project Honors:

China Construction Engineering Luban Award (National Quality Engineering), First Prize for Excellent Project Management Achievements in National Construction Engineering, China Communications Construction Quality Engineering Award

2. Project Overview:

The Addis Ababa Adama Expressway (Ethiopian AA Expressway) was the first modern expressway in Ethiopia and also the largest and highest grade expressway in East Africa at that time.

This highway is entirely constructed using Chinese technology and standards. The total length of the project route is about 80 kilometers, adopting the standard of a two-way six lane highway, with a roadbed width of 31 meters, and a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour and 100 kilometers per hour.

3. Technical difficulties:

Black cotton soil subgrade treatment

4. Key ancillary projects:

Multiple bridges and overpasses

5. Value significance:

This highway connects the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, with the country's second largest city, Adama, and is a major artery for logistics transportation in Ethiopia. After the opening of the highway, the travel time from Addis Ababa to Adama has been reduced from 2.5 hours to 45 minutes, which plays an important role in improving the travel of Ethiopian people, enhancing transportation efficiency, and attracting foreign investment.

The Ethiopian AA Expressway has been serving Ethiopia for many years and is an important component of the interconnected road network in the East African region. It is also an important means of transporting goods in Ethiopia. At the same time, it greatly facilitates the lives of local residents and the development of surrounding industries.

The Ethiopian AA Expressway Project is the first time that China has adopted Chinese highway design specifications and construction standards in foreign projects, and the first time that a toll road financing and management model has been adopted. In the implementation of the project, not only did it hire a large number of local laborers, but it also exported technology and management experience to Ethiopia, which helps Ethiopia strengthen its infrastructure capacity building. The successful completion and opening of the project marks the first successful application of Chinese highway standards in East Africa. It is a landmark project for Chinese highway engineering technology standards to go global and has a very positive impact on promoting Chinese highway standards. It is also a major achievement in the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Ethiopia in recent years.
