The project is located on the Rufiji River in southeastern Tanzania, approximately 350km from Dar es Salaam and 230km from the river mouth. The drainage area controlled above the dam site is 158,000 square kilometers.2The average annual flow is 887.6 cubic meters per second, and the average annual runoff is 27.9 billion cubic meters.3

The hub project structures include a 131m high roller compacted concrete gravity main dam, one 22m high roller compacted concrete free overflow weir and three earth and rockfill side dams ranging from 5m to 12m in height. The spillway structures include 7 overflow surface holes at the dam crest, 2 middle holes, 2 bottom holes and a saddle auxiliary spillway. The water intake system consists of an intake, pressure tunnel, gate shaft, surge tank and pressure steel pipes. The power plant is a shore-based surface plant, with 9 vertical shaft mixed-flow turbine units, each with a capacity of 235MW, for a total installed capacity of 2,115,000 kW.
