The New Demerara River Bridge project is located on the Demerara River in Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana, approximately600meters south of the existing Demerara River Bridge. It is a reinforced concrete bridge. The main bridge adopts a cable-stayed structure, with a total length of approximately2.8kilometers, and is a two-way4lane+with two non-motorized vehicle lanes. The design speed is80kilometers per hour, and the service life is100years. The total cost of the project is2.6US dollars, making it the largest transportation infrastructure project in Guyana's history. The main engineering contents include: bridge body, toll station, traffic signs, drainage system, crash barriers, bridge lighting, and bridge approach roads.

The existing Demerara River Bridge was built in1978year, is a two-way, two-lane steel floating bridge, with a speed limit of32kilometers per hour. The bridge deck needs to be opened1to2times per day to allow ships to pass upstream and downstream, each time taking1hours. When the floating bridge structure is under repair, traffic is interrupted for5hours or more each time, causing serious congestion. The new bridge is an elevated bridge, allowing all ships to pass through the main navigable channel without interrupting traffic. After the completion of the new bridge, the travel time will be reduced by three-quarters, the ship traffic capacity will be increased by more than double, and the daily maintenance cost of the bridge will be greatly reduced.

The New Demerara River Bridge project is a top priority for the Guyanese government and is of great significance to the residents on both sides of the Demerara River. After completion, the project will effectively promote local logistics and transportation, save travel costs for local residents, and drive economic development in the surrounding areas.
