Construction of Saudi Arabia's ambitious NEOM (The New Future City) continues to advance. On January 8, 2025, the NEOM pile foundation project, undertaken by PowerChina, completed the construction of a cast-in-place pile with a depth of 106.16 meters, a diameter of 2.5 meters, and a total steel cage weight of nearly 50 tons—currently the largest and deepest pile foundation in the Middle East!

The pile foundation project is described as extremely challenging. The construction site is only 200*800 meters, and affected by tidal changes and complex geological layers, the borehole walls are prone to collapse and shrinkage during drilling. The PowerChina project department focused on new technological breakthroughs in borehole verticality, the production and connection of ultra-large diameter steel bars, slurry preparation, and the hoisting of ultra-heavy steel cages, ensuring the smooth completion of the construction of the 100-meter-level ultra-large diameter cast-in-place piles.

As one of the world's largest engineering projects, Saudi Arabia's NEOM attracts top designers, contractors, and suppliers from around the globe. From power supply to infrastructure construction, from green energy to electromechanical equipment, Chinese technology and wisdom are deeply involved, providing strong support for the realization of Saudi Arabia's grand vision.

Chinese companies currently participating in the NEOM project include: China State Construction Engineering Corporation, PowerChina, China Railway Construction Corporation, China Harbour Engineering Company (Arabian Company), Huawei, Sunlight Energy, Baowu Maanshan Iron & Steel, Sany Heavy Industry, XCMG, and Sinomec International Engineering Co., Ltd.

NEOM is one of 14 "gigaprojects" under development in Saudi Arabia, part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, aimed at diversifying the country's economy away from its reliance on oil.

As a core project of NEOM, THE LINE consists of two parallel 500-meter-high skyscrapers stretching 170 kilometers across northeastern Saudi Arabia. However, due to financial pressures and practical challenges, the project has been scaled down. Bloomberg reported in April 2024 that THE LINE's original mid-term plan to accommodate 1.5 million residents by 2030 has been revised to accommodate fewer than 300,000, with construction expected to be completed at 2.4 kilometers, only 1.4% of the original plan.

THE LINE's design aims to address global urban challenges, creating a transformative and sustainable urban environment in harmony with nature. It will have no roads or cars, using disruptive innovation to create urban systems and combine the vibrancy of city life with the tranquility of green spaces and the convenience of being close to nature.
