The El Alto highway is located in the Chapare region of Cochabamba Province, stretching across the majestic Andes Mountains of South America, connecting the two major Bolivian cities of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz.4It is part of National Highway No. , playing a crucial role in logistics between Bolivia's east and west, and in interconnectivity with Brazil and Chile. The project's total length is30.3kilometers, with a road surface design width of20.6meters, and an elevation difference between the starting and ending points of1350meters. The project cost is4.26US dollars, making it the largest investment project among the Bolivian National Highway Administration's ongoing highway projects and one of the most expensive projects in the country.

The original road surface was dilapidated, posing significant safety hazards for vehicles. The Bolivian side had made repeated attempts to rebuild the highway, but due to geological, climatic, and technological constraints, all attempts ended in failure. After the Chinese side took over the construction, it introduced advanced construction technologies, overcoming difficulties in geology and other aspects, and carried out a comprehensive upgrade and transformation of the highway, upgrading the two-lane highway to a four-lane asphalt concrete road, and constructing separate tunnels4and bridges17reinforced concrete retaining walls6.1kilometers of anti-skid piles21000meters, and culverts139This is one of the most technically challenging highway projects currently underway in Bolivia. During construction, the project obtained a total of9national utility model patents,9provincial and ministerial-level construction methods,QCachievements4The El Alto highway project officially started construction in2018year6month and was successfully opened to traffic on2022year3month28day. Travel time has been reduced from several hours to approximately30minutes, significantly improving local traffic conditions and driving safety, promoting personnel exchanges and logistics transportation between Bolivia's eastern and western regions, stimulating the revitalization of tourism along the route, and contributing to long-term economic development.

The El Alto Highway project is not only a key highway connecting Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, but also an important part of Bolivia's east-west bio-oceanic corridor. Its completion and opening to traffic will promote commercial exchanges between the eastern and western regions, significantly boost the tourism industry in the Cochabamba tropical region and Santa Cruz province, reduce transportation and agricultural production costs, and represents a major milestone in Bolivia's road construction field.
