The Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Kenya is an important supporting project of the Kenya railway network plan. It is located west of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway's Nairobi terminal, approximately 3.5 kilometers from the center of Nairobi Station. The expansion and renovation project includes railway yards, container yards, connecting roads, and supporting projects. The total construction area is 43.43 square meters, including a total of 41 individual buildings, with a total construction area of approximately2square meters, and a railway yard of 2.05 square meters, a concrete structural surface of11.9 square meters, and an interlocking block area of 12.8 square meters. There is also one bridge and culvert.

ICD The previous annual handling capacity was 3 TEUs. After capacity expansion and modernization, the annual handling capacity of standard containers has increased to 40 TEUs. The project has complete railway arrival and departure, loading and unloading facilities, and container loading and unloading equipment. It can handle container trains as a whole, significantly improving the railway's container handling capacity, reducing cargo arrival time, attracting container cargo within the reasonable transportation range of the railway, and enhancing the railway's market competitiveness. In addition,ICD the project also has international container agency functions, domestic container agency, information management, and service functions, meeting the needs of the six East African countries for inland port functions in the operation of the Kenya Ports Authority.

The launch of the Nairobi Inland Container Port has effectively improved the future freight capacity of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, accelerated trade flow, reduced logistics costs, driven economic development along the railway, consolidated Kenya's position as an East African logistics hub, and played a positive role in promoting the Belt and Road Initiative further into the African hinterland. It has also created job opportunities for the Kenyan people.

This project was awarded the 2022-2023 National Excellent Engineering Award.
