1.Project Honors:

China Construction Engineering Luban Award (National High-Quality Engineering)

2.Project Overview:

The Doraleh Multipurpose Port in Djibouti, Africa, is the largest port project undertaken by Chinese companies in Northeast Africa to date. The construction includes1200meters long caisson foundation deep-water main wharf,175meters east side working vessel wharf,90square meters of road yard, approximately8square meters of buildings and other supporting facilities. The port includes6berths of10ten thousand tons class, with an annual design cargo throughput capacity of708ten thousand tons, and a container throughput capacity of20ten thousand standard containers.

3.Technical Challenges:

Djibouti has a tropical desert climate, with average summer temperatures exceeding40℃, and annual rainfall of less than150ml. Freshwater resources are extremely scarce, and using seawater directly for construction would cause serious corrosion and damage to the structure. Before the official construction of the port, Chinese construction companies first built a desalination plant and a power plant locally to provide water and electricity for the port construction.

In addition, Chinese construction companies also extracted groundwater from Ethiopia for construction use. Chinese construction companies drilled28deep wells at the groundwater extraction site in Ethiopia, and transported the water to the higher-altitude Antsehil reservoir through a two-stage pressure boosting station, and then transported it to the terminal reservoir in Djibouti by gravity flow.

4. Supporting Projects:
Two substations,350kilometers of water supply and distribution pipelines, two pressure boosting stations and6reservoirs, as well as the corresponding electromechanical equipment and automated control system.

In addition to supplying water and electricity for port construction, these infrastructure facilities also serve the surrounding residential areas. The water supply system, in particular, can provide10cubic meters of water per day, benefiting a population of75ten thousand people, accounting for the vast majority of Djibouti's population.

5. Value and Significance:
After the Doraleh Port went into operation, the highly automated and modernized loading and unloading methods increased the efficiency of ship operations by4times, doubling Djibouti's port's bulk cargo throughput capacity and significantly improving its overall competitiveness. Djibouti is located at the Horn of Africa, an important link between Asia, Africa, and Europe, and a key node of the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road". The successful opening of the Doraleh Multipurpose Port will provide an important transportation hub for Chinese companies to expand their market in Africa, and will also promote the rapid economic development of Djibouti. The port service industry is a pillar industry and a major source of fiscal revenue for Djibouti. This project will drive the development of port-related industries, bonded logistics, and international trade, strengthen economic ties within and outside the region, and enhance Djibouti's overall competitiveness in the entire East African region.21世纪海上丝绸之路”的重要节点。
