1.Project Honors:

The British Research Establishment (BRE) hosted a "China Awards Ceremony" in Shanghai, where the Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway and Associated Works project received the highest rating for environmental sustainability.2023 BREThe China Awards Ceremony

2.Third Runway System Project Overview:

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is a vital transportation hub in Hong Kong, one of the world's busiest passenger airports, and the world's busiest cargo airport, connecting Asia and many parts of the world. To meet long-term air traffic demands, the newly constructed Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway System Project is massive, equivalent to building a new airport next to the existing one. The project is estimated to cost1417hundreds of millions of yuan and will surpass the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Rail to become the most expensive infrastructure project in Hong Kong since its founding.

The Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway is a new runway built north of the existing Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island. The Third Runway construction project is a land reclamation project covering approximately650hectares. The Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway is3800meters long and60meters wide,T2adding approximately63parking positions to the passenger concourse. Upon completion, the entire airport will have245parking positions.

3.Key Associated Works:

1) Land reclamation of approximately650hectares using deep cement mixing and other excavation-free methods.

2) Construction ofT2a passenger concourse and apron.
3) Construction of a3800meter-long runway and associated taxiway system, along with reconfiguration of the existing north runway.

4) Expansion of Terminal 2.

5) Construction of a2,600meter-long Automated People Mover (APM) system connecting Terminal 2 to theT2passenger concourse.
6) New baggage handling system connecting Terminal 2 with theT2passenger concourse.
7) Other related supporting airport infrastructure, road networks, and transportation facilities.

4.Technical Challenges:

The Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway System Project faced numerous construction difficulties and challenges. It required meeting construction needs while ensuring environmental protection and minimizing the probability of pollutants leaking from land reclamation and impacting marine life.

The biggest challenges in construction included offshorePVD(Drainage board) engineering vessels, offshoreDCM(cement mixing pile) engineering vessels, onshore stone column machines, and onshoreDCMpile driving equipment manufacturing and construction technology hurdles.

5.Value and Significance:

After the completion of the Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway System, it will increase the50%annual passenger capacity. Hong Kong International Airport will be able to handle an annual passenger volume of1.2billion passengers and an annual cargo volume of1000tens of thousands of tons. This runway is very important for the overall increase in economic power, efficiency, and competitiveness.
The Hong Kong International Airport Third Runway System Project has provided a large number of jobs and will continue to create more employment opportunities in the future, supporting the economic development of the Greater Bay Area. Hong Kong International Airport will transform from a "city airport" to an "airport city," becoming a unique and important landmark in the Greater Bay Area.
