1.Project Honors:

ENR Global Best Project Award, China Overseas Engineering Excellent Camp Award

2.Project Overview:

Yaoundé to Douala Highway total length 195 kilometers, is the first highway in Cameroon and even the entire central African region. It is the most convenient and rapid passage connecting Cameroon's capital Yaoundé and the important western port city of Douala, and it is also an important component of the cargo transit channel between Douala Port and inland countries such as Chad and Central Africa. It plays an irreplaceable role in Cameroon's trunk highway network.

2022In the year, the first phase of the Yaoundé-Douala Highway was completed, with a total length of 59.3 kilometers, using high-modulus asphalt pavement, two-way 6 lanes, with a design speed of 110 kilometers per hour. The second phase of the project involves the construction of highway connecting lines and toll stations. After completion, the travel time from Yaoundé to Douala will be shortened from the previous4hours to less than2hours, and the safety of driving has also been greatly improved. While improving the economic development of areas along the highway with a population of over 1000 ten thousand, it has also greatly improved the efficiency of cargo transportation between Cameroon and Chad, Central Africa and other countries.

3.Technical Challenges:

The Yaoundé-Douala Highway project is located in the hilly area of Cameroon, with very complex terrain. The project's elevation drops from the starting point of800meters to the end point of400meters, with a very large elevation difference. The total volume of earth and stone work for the project reaches3000ten thousand cubic meters. The project is located in a tropical rainforest climate, with more than9months of rain throughout the year, and only3months of dry season suitable for construction. In addition, some construction sections have heavy traffic, and road renovation sections are subject to many municipal factors. Faced with numerous challenges, Chinese engineering project personnel scientifically arranged construction tasks and procedures, reasonably allocated machinery, equipment, and personnel, made full use of the dry season, and carried out earthwork and road surface projects to ensure the smooth completion of construction tasks.

In addition, technical personnel have solved practical problems encountered in production based on the geological, hydrological, and climatic characteristics of the region, and carried out technological innovation. For example, the use of high-modulus asphalt concrete instead of ordinary asphalt concrete reduced the thickness of asphalt concrete from the original32centimeters to25centimeters, not only saving raw materials but also effectively reducing environmental pollution caused by construction production. In particular, since the completion of the construction and opening to traffic for more than5years, there have been no quality problems with the road surface.

Cameroon has a beautiful environment. Technical personnel combined the natural environment of the region to design a route that blends with nature. In order to avoid damage and pollution to the environment during construction, project construction personnel adopted fixed-point discharge and collection for mud, sewage, and garbage during construction; scientifically selected borrow pits and disposal sites, and adopted water truck dust suppression methods for subgrade construction to avoid dust pollution to the surrounding environment. In addition, the project actively cooperated with local environmental protection departments to recycle, process, and reuse construction waste, promptly scrapped old machinery, and implemented energy conservation and emission reduction, significantly reducing the impact on the surrounding environment.

4.Value and Significance:

The construction and completion of the Yaoundé-Douala Highway not only makes Cameroon's roads more convenient but also enhances Cameroon's influence on neighboring countries. This highway is the most complete highway built in Cameroon to date, and it is a symbol of friendship between China and Cameroon. China has provided a lot of assistance to Cameroon, demonstrating China's scientific and technological strength and engineering quality. As the most sincere partner, China has gained high trust and respect in Cameroon and other African countries.
