1. Project Honors:

2. Project Overview:
The PKM Highway Project (Sukkur-Multan Section) starts from Sukkur in Sindh Province in the south and ends at Multan, the economic center of Punjab Province, in the north. It is 392 kilometers long, with a design speed of 120 kilometers per hour. It is Pakistan's first six-lane highway with intelligent transportation functions. The project contract duration is 36 months, and the contract amount is approximately US$2.889 billion.
The PKM project is a high-standard highway with the highest design level in Pakistan, featuring full-line greening and a flood control standard designed for a once-in-a-century event. The project established a multi-level, comprehensive quality control network encompassing design and construction. The project builders have created one of Pakistan's most advanced intelligent highways with innovation and craftsmanship.
On May 26, 2018, the first 33-kilometer section of the project opened to traffic 14 months ahead of the contract schedule. On July 23, 2019, the entire project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.
3. Technical Challenges:
During construction, the highest temperature often exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. To adapt to the local high-temperature and heavy-load environment, the project adopted a new standard for asphalt mixture rutting resistance technology at 80 degrees Celsius, successfully applied SBS modified asphalt technology, and ensured the quality of pavement formation. The project used drone aerial photography and surveying technology for the first time in Pakistan to accurately obtain data for the entire line; optimized the design scheme of the cross-river bridge through hydrological and physical models; successfully overcame the difficulties of constructing small-angle skew bridges; and applied deflection detection technology for the first time to control the quality of the subgrade and pavement. The project improved local intelligent transportation system standards, with all toll collection systems and signal management functions fully electronic and automated. The optical cables laid along the entire line can transmit real-time information such as road monitoring videos to the control center to comprehensively grasp traffic conditions and ensure traffic safety.
4. Key Ancillary Projects:
Along the 392-kilometer route, there are 100 bridges, 468 passages, 991 culverts, 11 interchanges, 6 pairs of service areas, 5 pairs of rest areas, and 22 toll stations.
5. Value and Significance:
Multan and Sukkur, the cities connected by the project, are important cities in Pakistan. The completion of the project has reduced the travel time between the two cities from 11 hours to less than 4 hours, accelerating the construction of the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" and exchanges between China and Pakistan. During the construction process, the Pakistani government provided great support for the project, and it has become a model for security in the construction of the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor".
